No. Your text is read aloud by your browser's built-in speech engine on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or sent anywhere — which is why it also works without an internet connection once the page has loaded.
The voices come from your operating system and browser — not from this site. Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox each ship different voice sets, and the list can change when your browser or OS updates. That is why a voice you love on one device may not exist on another.
Some browser and operating-system combinations expose no voices to websites at all. If the voice list is empty, try Chrome or Edge on a desktop computer, which usually offer the widest selection. The page will tell you clearly if no voices were found.
Yes — the Speed slider goes from 0.5× (half speed, handy while taking notes) to 2× (double speed, handy when reviewing). The estimated reading time updates to match the speed you pick. Pitch and volume sliders are there too.
No — and any site that promises it is doing something different. Your browser's speech engine reads aloud through your speakers but does not produce a downloadable audio file, so this tool focuses on doing live read-aloud really well.
Browsers handle very long single utterances unreliably and can stall or cut off mid-sentence. This tool avoids that by splitting your text into short sentence-sized chunks and reading them one after another, so even long essays read straight through.
Word-by-word highlighting needs the browser to report exactly where it is in the text, and not every voice or browser provides that. When it is unavailable, the tool falls back to highlighting the current sentence instead, so you can always follow along.
Mostly yes. The voices live on your device, so once this page has loaded you can disconnect and keep listening. The page itself needs an internet connection the first time you open it.
