Typing Speed Test
Check your WPM and accuracy in 30, 60, or 120 seconds. Free, no signup — the timer starts on your first keystroke.
How to use the typing speed test
- Pick a duration. 30s for a quick check, 60s for the standard benchmark, 120s for a stamina test.
- Start typing the passage in the box. The countdown begins on your first keystroke.
- Watch live stats. Words turn green when correct and red when wrong; net WPM, raw WPM, and accuracy update as you type.
- See your results. At 0:00 (or when you finish the passage) you get net and raw WPM, consistency, accuracy, and error counts. Your best score per duration is saved, recent tests appear in your history below, and pressing Enter starts a quick retest.
Frequently asked questions
What is a typing speed test?
A typing speed test measures how fast and accurately you type. You copy a passage of text before the timer runs out, and the tool reports your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy percentage.
How is WPM calculated in a words per minute test?
Standard WPM divides your correctly typed characters by 5 (the average word length), then divides by the minutes elapsed. Typing 300 correct characters in one minute equals 60 WPM.
What is a good typing speed?
The average typing speed is around 40 WPM. Above 60 WPM is considered good, and professional typists often exceed 80–100 WPM with high accuracy.
How can I increase my typing speed?
Practice touch typing without looking at the keyboard, keep your fingers on the home row, take short timed tests regularly, and prioritize accuracy first — speed follows naturally as your muscle memory improves.
Is this typing test good for students?
Yes. Faster, accurate typing helps students finish essays and assignments sooner and take better notes. The 60-second test is a good daily benchmark for school-age typists.
What counts as an error in this typing test?
Any word that doesn't exactly match the passage counts as an error, including extra characters typed beyond a word. Accuracy is your correct characters divided by all typed characters.
What is raw WPM?
Raw WPM is your typing speed counting every keystroke, including errors — calculated the same way as net WPM but with all typed characters. Comparing raw WPM to your (net) WPM shows how much speed your mistakes cost you: a big gap means slow down slightly and prioritize accuracy.
What does consistency mean in a typing test?
Consistency scores how steady your typing pace was, from 0 to 100%. It is based on the variation in your per-second speed: a smooth, even rhythm scores near 100, while bursts followed by pauses score lower. Steady typing usually produces a higher net WPM than fast-but-choppy typing.
Can I take a typing test on my phone?
Yes — the test works on mobile. Tap the typing box to bring up your keyboard. Most people type slower on phones, so compare your score against your own best rather than desktop averages.
Does this typing speed test cost anything?
No. The typing speed test is completely free with no signup, no account, and unlimited retakes.
Is my typing data stored anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Only your best WPM scores per duration and your recent test history are saved on your own device (localStorage), and you can clear them anytime by clearing your browser data.
Which test duration should I choose: 30, 60, or 120 seconds?
30 seconds is good for a quick check or warm-up, 60 seconds is the standard benchmark most people compare, and 120 seconds tests your consistency and stamina over a longer stretch.
