How to make a grading rubric
A grading rubric is a grid that turns subjective judgment into consistent numbers. Each row is something you are grading (a criterion); each column is how well a student did (a performance level); each cell holds the points for that combination. When every piece of work is scored on the same grid, grades stop feeling arbitrary.
- Add criteria and levels. This page starts with four criteria and four levels (Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor). Use + Criterion and + Level to grow the grid, or the × buttons to shrink it.
- Rename everything. Click any criterion name or level label and type your own — "Thesis statement", "Needs work", whatever fits your assignment.
- Set the point values. Type a number into every cell. The highest value in each row is what the tool treats as that row's maximum.
- Score a student. Click one cell per row — the total, maximum, and percentage update instantly in the Results panel. Click a selected cell again to undo it.
- Print it. Hit Print rubric for a clean handout (clear the scores first if you want a blank rubric to fill in by hand).
How to calculate rubric score
A rubric score is simple arithmetic: add up the points of the selected cell in each row to get the total, then divide by the maximum possible total and multiply by 100. If a student's selected cells add up to 18 and the rubric's maximum is 24, the score is 75%. The Results panel on this page does that calculation live, so you never do it by hand.
What is a rubric maker?
A rubric maker is a tool that helps you build a grading rubric - a scoring grid of criteria (rows) against performance levels (columns). You type a point value into each cell, and this tool adds up the selected cells automatically to give you a total, a maximum, and a percentage.
Is this rubric maker free?
Yes. This free rubric maker has no sign-up, no accounts, and no limits. Build as many rubrics as you like, and everything you type stays in your browser - nothing is uploaded or stored.
How do I use this free grading rubric template?
Add criteria with the + Criterion button and levels with + Level, rename them by clicking the names, then type point values into each cell. Click one cell per row to score a piece of work - the total, maximum, and percentage update instantly in the Results panel.
How to calculate rubric score?
A rubric score is the sum of the points in the selected cell of each row, divided by the maximum possible total, times 100. For example, selected cells of 3 + 4 + 2 = 9 out of a maximum of 12 is 75%. This tool does the math live every time you click a cell.
Can I print my rubric?
Yes. Click Print rubric to print a clean copy of the table - the buttons and controls are hidden automatically. Clear the scores first if you want a blank rubric to fill in by hand.
