Story Time Read-Aloud
Free classroom read-alouds. Pick from over 1,000 public-domain children's stories — Aesop, Grimm, Andersen, Lang's fairy books, Kipling, Carroll, Baum, Milne, and more — press play, and let the browser read aloud with word-by-word highlighting. Or paste your own text. No account, no install, nothing uploaded.

Tip: Chrome and Edge include the most natural-sounding free voices. On iPhone, Samantha is usually the best pick.
Your text
Paste a poem, a worksheet, a passage — anything you have the right to read aloud — and hear it in the same reader.
How to use Story Time in your classroom
- Pick a story. Filter the library by age (3–5, 5–8, 8–12), theme, or search for a title or author. Every card shows the listening time so you can fit it into your lesson slot.
- Press Play. The story opens in the reader and starts reading aloud with word-by-word highlighting — great for follow-along reading on a projector or smartboard.
- Tune it. Slow the speed for young or multilingual learners, pick the most pleasant voice on your device, and pause anytime for questions.
- Read your own text. The Your text section reads anything you paste — a poem, a worksheet passage, a class announcement.
A note on content
These are original 19th- and early-20th-century texts, kept faithful to their authors. A few contain dated period language or attitudes — we excluded the worst offenders, but we recommend previewing a story before reading it aloud, especially for younger classes.
A note on copyright
Every built-in story is in the public domain in the United States — its copyright has expired, so you may read, print, perform, and share these stories freely, including in class. The read-aloud audio is generated on your own device by your browser's speech engine; nothing is recorded or uploaded. For the paste-your-own-text box, only use text you have the right to read aloud.
Frequently asked questions
How do I play a story read-aloud for my class?
Pick an age group and theme above (or search the library), then press Play on any story card. The story opens in the reader and starts reading aloud with word-by-word highlighting. Use the speed slider if you want it slower for young listeners.
Are these stories free to use in my classroom?
Yes. Every built-in story is in the public domain in the United States, which means no one owns the copyright and you may read, print, and perform them freely — including in class. The read-aloud itself is generated on your device by your browser's speech engine.
Can I read aloud my own text, like a worksheet or a poem?
Yes. Scroll to the Your text section, paste anything into the box, and press Read aloud. It uses the same voice, speed, and highlighting controls as the story reader. Only use text you have the right to read aloud.
How long is each story?
Every story card shows an estimated listening time based on a natural read-aloud pace of about 150 words per minute. Most stories run 1 to 15 minutes — sized for a classroom slot. The five longer Jungle Book adventures run 40 to 60 minutes and work well split across several days.
Does the read-aloud work offline or on a school Chromebook?
It works in any modern browser, including Chromebooks, with no install and no account. Voices come from your device's built-in speech engine, so the selection varies by device. An internet connection is needed to load the page, but the reading itself happens on your device.
Can I change the voice or slow it down?
Yes. The reader has a voice picker listing every voice your device provides, plus a speed slider from half-speed to double-speed. Slowing to 0.8x or 0.9x works well for young or multilingual learners.
