Seating Chart Maker

Fair, random classroom seating charts — paste your class list, set the grid, shuffle, then click two seats to swap.

Blank lines are ignored; duplicate names are seated once.

Everything stays in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

How to make a classroom seating chart

A seating chart maker takes the politics out of where everyone sits: the shuffle is random, so no one can complain about favoritism. This one is free, needs no sign-up, and your class list never leaves your browser.

  1. Paste your class list — one student name per line. Blank lines are skipped and duplicates are seated only once.
  2. Set rows and columns to match your classroom layout. Fewer names than seats? The leftover seats show as "Empty".
  3. Press Generate for a fair, random arrangement. Don't like it? Press Generate again for a fresh shuffle.
  4. Click two seats to swap — move a student into an empty spot, or separate two chatty neighbors, without re-rolling the whole chart.
  5. Print the chart for your desk or the classroom door.

When names outnumber seats

If your class is bigger than the grid, a warning names the overflow and the extra students stay unseated. Add a row or column (or trim the list) and press Generate again — the grid always matches the dimensions you set.

What is a seating chart maker?

A seating chart maker is a free online tool that arranges your students into a classroom seating grid. Paste your class list, set rows and columns, and get a random seating chart in seconds - no sign-up needed.

How do I make a random seating chart?

Paste student names (one per line), choose your rows and columns, and press Generate. The tool shuffles your list with a random seating chart generator, so every chart is fair and unpredictable. Press Generate again to reshuffle.

What happens if I have more students than seats?

A warning appears and the extra names are left unseated - the grid always matches your rows and columns. Add another row or column, or remove names, and press Generate again.

Can I swap two students after generating?

Yes. Click any seat to select it, then click a second seat to swap them. This works with empty seats too, so you can move a student into an open spot.

Is my class list stored anywhere?

No. Your classroom seating arrangement lives only in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored on any server - clear the list any time with the Clear button.
