How to calculate mean, median, mode and standard deviation
Descriptive statistics summarize a list of numbers in a few telling values: where the center is (mean, median, mode) and how spread out the data is (range, variance, standard deviation). Here's the recipe this calculator follows:
- Paste your numbers above, separated by commas, spaces, or new lines. The results update as you type.
- Read the center. The mean is the average (sum ÷ count); the median is the middle value when sorted; the mode is the most frequent value.
- Compare mean and median. If the mean sits well above the median, a few large outliers are pulling the average up — the median is the more honest "typical" value.
- Check the spread. The range is max − min; the standard deviation tells you the typical distance from the mean. Bigger means more scattered.
Population or sample: which standard deviation is this?
Every standard deviation calculator must pick one: population (divide by N — you have the whole group) or sample (divide by N − 1 — you're estimating a larger group). This calculator reports population statistics, which is what most homework problems mean by "variance" and "standard deviation."
Mean vs. median: which should you use?
Use the mean for symmetric data without extreme values — test scores in a tight class, for instance. Use the median when outliers exist: the median of house prices describes a neighborhood far better than a mean dragged up by one mansion. And when categories matter more than numbers (most common shirt size), the mode is your statistic.
How does this statistics calculator work?
Paste a list of numbers — separated by commas, spaces, or new lines — and press Calculate. This statistics calculator returns the count, minimum, maximum, range, mean, median, mode, population variance, population standard deviation, and the sorted list.
How does the mean median mode calculator handle more than one mode?
It reports every value tied for the highest frequency, so a bimodal data set shows two modes. If every value appears exactly once, there is no mode and the calculator says so instead of picking a fake one.
How is standard deviation calculated here?
As a population standard deviation: take each value's distance from the mean, square those distances, average them, and take the square root. Every standard deviation calculator must choose population or sample — this one uses population (dividing by N).
What is the difference between population and sample variance?
Population variance divides by N (the whole group); sample variance divides by N − 1 to estimate a larger population. This calculator reports population statistics, which is what most homework problems mean by variance and standard deviation.
What does it mean when there is no mode?
It means no value repeats — every number in the list appears exactly once. The mean and median still describe the data, so a missing mode is normal, not an error.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Every calculation runs in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to a server, stored, or tracked.
